Utqiagvik (formerly Barrow) is a small North Slope community accessed via daily flights from Anchorage and Fairbanks. CPS plans support for researchers in Barrow, and local support is provided by CPS partner, UIC Science, a subsidiary of Ukpeagvik Iñupiat Corporation (UIC), the Barrow village corporation established under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) of 1971.
While CPS’ support focuses on National Science Foundation-funded research, UIC Science provides local support to a broader range of researchers working in Utqiagvik, Alaska, and surrounding communities. UIC Science operates the UIC-owned facilities and the Barrow Environmental Observatory.
The Barrow Bulletin is a blog-style website created to help research teams prepare for work in Utqiagvik, Alaska. Meet CPS staff and find information on facilities, infrastructure and services available, and on policies for those conducting research in Alaska. The website also provides news updates about research and the Utqiagvik community.
